Who Has The Best Motorcycle LED Turn Signals Lights?
LED Signal Lights Vs Conventional
LED turn signals offer many advantages over halogen or incandescent bulbs signals. I’m dropping the incandescent bulbs from this comparison simply because they are quite inferior and are being phased out.
The number one and most important advantage of LED lights is they are brighter and broadcast a wider light than halogen. In my opinion safety is of paramount importance when operating a motorcycle. LED lights offer about 80 to 100 lumens per watt vs 16 to 24 lumens per watt for the halogen light. (A lumen is a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source) The more visible your motorcycle is when driving due to brighter turn signals, running lights, headlight and brake light the more likely you will be seen by a motorist in daylight or at night.
Other advantages of the LED over halogen is they use much less energy, do not get hot like halogens, offer a longer life span and they are available in colors unlike halogens. Overall, you have a brighter longer lasting light when you choose LED signals.
Replace The Signal Light, Or The Entire Fixture
This is a choice you will have to make. Replacing your existing signal bulbs with an LED light is of course easier than replacing the entire signal light and housing. With minimal common tools, ie: screwdriver or hex key wrench, even someone who is not mechanically inclined can replace an incandescent or halogen bulb. Once the cover of the signal is removed the bulbs are usually a push, turn and pull to remove. There are typically small nibs on the sides of the light socket that line up with grooves in the light socket. Installing the LED is simply reversing the procedure. It is very important when replacing just the bulb to be sure you are replacing it with the correct LED specified for your year, make and model motorcycle. There are conversion kits to upgrade to an LED signal where it is not a simple unplug and plug in. These kits are also fairly easy to install.
Replacing the entire turn signal assembly is much more involved. You will need different tools and some wiring experience. There are numerous sources on the internet for a wide array of aftermarket motorcycle signal styles. Here again, be sure the signal you choose will fit your motorcycle without having to make any alterations. Look for feedback on the internet from people who have installed the signal light you are thinking of purchasing, preferably on the same bike. Different styles of bikes will be harder than others to replace the entire signal. If it seems too daunting, it may be wiser to have a local motorcycle shop or dealer do the installation.
If you do choose to replace only the incandescent or halogen bulb, three excellent sources for the LED lights only are shown below. If you live near a motorcycle shop or a dealer they can get the correct LED for your needs specific to your bike.
Where to Purchase Aftermarket LED Signals
My definition of “aftermarket” is parts and accessories that did not come attached to your bike when you picked it up from the showroom. Many riders are loyal to their brand of motorcycle and will only purchase parts and accessories from a same brand dealership. If the dealer does the installation they will stand behind their work and the product.
There will be a much larger selection of styles and quality when purchasing through the internet. Of course, you will want the best quality signals at a competitive price. It cannot be said enough, reviews are your best tool in deciding which signal and from which vendor you make your purchase.
