Motorcycle Windshields
Windshields….Vision and Protection

A motorcycle windshield keeps wind, bugs, and debris out of your face and chest while riding. It makes a huge difference in keeping you comfortable, especially when you’re spending hours on the road. By blocking windblast, a windshield can really help cut down on rider fatigue during long trips. You’ll notice less strain on your neck and shoulders after a full day of riding, and it adds a bit of extra protection from unpredictable weather, too. For riders who cruise at higher speeds, having a windshield can truly add some confidence because you aren’t taking the full force of the wind.
Good, Better, Best….
There are three important factors to determine good, better or best when it comes to grading motorcycle windshields. 1 – Fabrication material, 2 – Design and 3 – Mounting.
Fabrication Material
First, the materials used will determine the durability, clarity and longevity. The most common are acrylic or polycarbonate.
Acrylic is usually less expensive and offers good clarity, so colors look true and visibility is sharp. Polycarbonate, on the other hand, is popular for being much more impact resistant; if a rock or branch comes flying at you, polycarbonate will handle it better and is less likely to crack. For people who value safety or expect to ride a lot in areas with loose gravel or debris, polycarbonate windshields are often the way to go. Both materials come in tinted and clear options, so you can pick what suits your riding style. Polycarbonate is the better material.
Mounting
Most windshields include a mounting kit that fits certain bikes or handlebars. Installation usually involves attaching brackets to your bike’s frame or handlebars, lining up the shield, and tightening everything so it’s secure. Always keep the instruction manual handy for your specific model. Doublecheck for a snug fit and make sure bolts are tightened properly before heading out. If you’re not handy with tools or if your bike needs a custom setup, it’s best to ask a mechanic for help to make sure everything lines up perfectly and stays stable, even at high speeds.
Design/Style
Riders overwhelmingly favor premium brands with contoured or “recurve” designs that deflect air up and over the helmet to eliminate wind buffeting. There are tall, short, and even adjustable windshields available. I always recommend thinking about your riding habits. Taller shields are great for long trips and highway speeds, since they provide maximum wind protection. Shorter windshields are popular for city or casual riding, since they’re less bulky and give your bike a sportier look. Adjustable windshields allow you to switch things up for different types of rides; that’s a great choice for riders who want flexibility without having to buy multiple shields. It really comes down to what feels best for you and matches your bike’s aesthetic.
